Do I Need a Sleep Test

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms and are relatively healthy, you may benefit from a home sleep test:

  • Loud snoring

  • Obese or overweight

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness

  • Daytime fatigue

  • Interrupted sleep

  • Waking up choking during the night

  • Bed partner has witnessed pauses in your breathing

  • Sleep is not refreshing

  • Morning headaches

  • Trouble falling or staying asleep

  • Dry mouth or sore throat in the mornings

If you have multiple medical problems, or depending on your specific symptoms, an In-Lab Sleep Test might be better for you.

You will find many home sleep test sites on the Internet, offering a home sleep test after filling out a simple on-line questionnaire. Please beware that going through a sleep test without a prior thorough evaluation by a sleep specialist or physician can result in the wrong diagnosis and/or treatment or even worse, the false reassurance that everything is ok when it is not.

What to Expect

You will be mailed a recording device and several sensors to attach to it after applying them to your body. These sensors will measure your respiration pattern and blood oxygen saturation while you sleep. The test is non-invasive. It can give us more information about why you may be having sleep problems and in many cases will help diagnose sleep apnea.
